Family Travel in Costa Rica: Embracing the Art of Pura Vida

By Véronique Dargy

In Costa Rica, pura vida is much more than just a saying; it embodies a way of life centered on simplicity, gratitude, and the joy of being fully present. For families, it serves as an invitation to slow down, reconnect with nature, and savor every discovery together. This article will guide you toward a memorable adventure, fully inspired by the spirit of pura vida.

Fascinating Biodiversity for All Ages

Costa Rica boasts an impressive variety of animal and plant species within a small area, making it a vibrant playground and learning experience for the whole family! As you explore the national parks and tropical rainforests, you'll be able to spot:

  • The famous sloths hanging in the canopy;
  • The vibrantly colored toucans, such as the majestic keel-billed toucan with its multicolored beak or Swainson’s toucan;
  • Howler monkey, a must-see on jungle hikes with its impressive howls that echo for kilometers, as well as the white-faced capuchin monkey, which often pops up on the trails and near the beaches. Keep your eyes peeled (and your bags tightly closed, because they love to rummage through them!);
  • The fascinating feathered basilisk (or “green basilisk”), small, crested lizard capable of running on water (see image);
  • The sea turtle coming ashore to lay their eggs on protected beaches;
  • Hundreds of species of exotic birds deep within the forests.

Is Costa Rica a Safe Destination For Families?

Recognized as one of the most peaceful and stable countries in Central America, Costa Rica offers a particularly reassuring environment for travelling with children. The country stands out for its well-developed tourist infrastructure, a high-quality healthcare system, and its welcoming people (the Ticos), known for their kindness toward families. As with any trip abroad, it’s important to follow basic safety precautions:

  • Choose central, established hotels over private rentals for ultimate comfort and safety. Your Travel Advisor will recommend and book the perfect fit.
  • Travel during the day to drive safely on winding roads or off the beaten path;
  • Do not leave anything in plain sight or anything of value in the vehicle, and stay naturally vigilant when swimming.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica, And For How Long?

Costa Rica can be visited year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm:

  • The dry season (December through April): It offers beautiful sunny days, ideal for the beach and outdoor activities.
  • The green season (May through November): also known as the “rainy season,” it features lush nature, impressive waterfalls, very active wildlife, and fewer tourists.

To travel at a leisurely pace with children in Costa Rica, we recommend planning your trip for 10 to 14 days. Don’t be misled by the short distances shown on the map; due to mountainous terrain and road conditions, covering a hundred kilometers can often take 4 to 5 hours. Therefore, it’s best to plan your itinerary based on travel time rather than just kilometers!

Pro tip: Stick to one or two main bases for your entire stay. To get around, consider renting a suitable vehicle (SUV or 4x4) or hiring a private driver. This will help you avoid the stress of winding or muddy roads during the rainy season.

What to Do in Costa Rica with Your Family?

Costa Rica is an ideal destination for families, offering a wide range of experiences suitable for all age groups. To enjoy your trip without feeling exhausted, we recommend a mix of gentle adventures, educational activities, and moments of relaxation.

 For Families Seeking Discovery and Adventure:

  • Volcanoes (Arenal or Poás): Marvel at impressive craters and walk along ancient lava flows on easy-to-access trails. - Suspension Bridges: Safely explore the rainforest at Mistico Park (Arenal) or Monteverde.
  • Educational Activities: Observe wildlife at the renowned Proyecto Asís sanctuary and rehabilitation center, or participate in a cacao workshop in La Fortuna.
  • Boat Excursions: Discover the Tortuguero canals or go whale watching at Marino Ballena National Park (Uvita).
  • Moderate to Intense Thrills: Experience ziplining in Monteverde or enjoy a leisurely rafting ride (ages 6 and up).
  • Beaches and Surfing: Swim in the calm waters of Manuel Antonio or take a surf lesson suitable for all ages at Tamarindo, Dominical, or Playa Hermosa.
  • Cooking Workshops: Make tortillas at a local’s home or join a farm-to-table cooking class.

And to relax?

Costa Rica offers wonderful opportunities to recharge, for both adults and children:

  • mud baths for the whole family;
  • relaxing in natural hot springs at the foot of a volcano;
  • outdoor yoga sessions;
  • watching spectacular sunsets over the ocean.

Pro tip: Don’t fall into the trap of overpacking your days, trying to see and do everything. Plan some free time to unwind, get in tune with nature’s rhythm, and enjoy the moment.
